5Great Tankless Heater
By Derek S. Sutherland
I ordered this unit online and installed it myself. Amid all the warnings about having a licensed plumber do it and the warning about voiding the warranty (I will have a license plumber inspect my installation which according to Rinnai is acceptable) I did my homework on this months before I started the project. I am pretty handy but this was the first gas line project that I attempted. Six months ago I would have told you I would never mess with gas. After due diligent homework I was ready to go.For those who are also thinking about DIY here is a quick run down of what I had to do. First I had to get the gas meter upgraded to a larger unit. Nicor did this for only $67 or something like that. This thing uses 4-5 times the amount of gas when running than your average tank unit but over time uses less gas as it is not running all the time like your tank unit was. Once the meter was in I was ready to go. You need to make sure you size the line correctly using the natural gas plumber charts on the internet or in the manual of this unit. Since I was about 70 feet away from the meter running an inch line would be just below the max of 199,000 BTU required. So I had to run a dedicated inch and a quarter black gas pipe all the way to the unit. This would give me plenty of gas plus allow for a natural gas grill as well. I took a week off of work, family was out of town so I could take my time without rushing. For the gas piping I bought all my piping from either Lowes or Home Depot. They cut and thread your pipe for free. The only problem was there were several trips made to the store as I took on one section of the run at a time. As long as you use the best piping dope (mine was some blue monster) and get the pipe tight you should not run into any problems as far as leaks. I even installed a ball value at the beginning of my run so I could turn on the gas to the rest of the house while still working on the new line.Once the gas line was in the unit installation after that was a piece of cake assuming you have knowledge of copper piping soldering. I must admit that I had some extremely small leaks at the bottom where I attached the water vales. Make sure you use plenty of plumbers tape here - apparently the first time I did not. Note that contrary to another review this unit DOES NOT require stainless piping exhaust but instead the not so expensive exhaust venting made specifically for this unit. My exhaust was right out the side wall so I purchased a couple small pieces for around $60.Once installed I was ready to give it a test run. After turning on the hot water several times I kept getting an error code 11. One of the reasons for this code was no gas. What I figured out (which was not in the manual) was that my new gas line had lots of air in it. So what we did was turned the hot water on for a minute to get the error code and shut it off. We did this about 7-8 times and eventually all the air was purged and the unit turned on. Success!!!This unit provides plenty of hot water for us allowing us to use several outlets at once. Note that we are on a well system in Northern Illinois so the cold rise GPM I think puts us close at 6 GPM. What was also very surprising to us is that this unit is super duper quiet, You cannot even tell this unit is on if it was not for the red light in the front. I have read complaints about waiting for water, cold surprises, etc... Well for us using the old tank heater we too had to wait for water and we too would get cold surprises if taking a shower after someone else took one 5-10 minutes earlier. So this is no different with this new tankless unit and if we have to wait longer for hot water we do not notice it.In summary we are very happy with this unit so far and knowing we have unlimited hot water is very nice when you have relatives over all taking showers one right after another. If you can DIY you will save A LOT of money plus with the small savings in gas every month over the long haul I expect the savings to pay for the unit itself. I paid $1300 for the unit and I get a $300 tax credit. Let's just say I spent another $350 for the pipings and other materials I needed for the install. That's a total of of $1350. If I save $120 a year in gas and it lasts 20 years well you do the math. In any event savings or no savings we are very happy and would never go back to a tank water heater.

4Great Product - Be Carefull about suggested accessories
By Brian Sibbitt
Overall I'm quite satisfied with the Rinnai Tankless water heater, it solved all the problems I expected it to with unlimited water supply. My only complaint is about the Amazon recommendations regarding the Webstone Isolator valves. Between the misleading recommendation and no mention that Rinnai includes isolator valves were included, I ended up with an extra set that I can't return because I didn't have the Rinnai unit installed within 30 days of the order delivery. So if you're buying this heater, don't buy the extra isolator valves that everyone says you need because they come with the unit.

5Great unit, I forget it's there
By R. Ellis
I purchased my unit from another place, online, because it was a bit cheaper at the time (April 2013). I love not having to worry about running out of hot water! Showers, laundry, dishes, etc... As long as you have gas and water (and a little electricity), you have hot water. Some tips/lessons learned* This unit is very efficient!* You will need the polypropylene concentric venting! Don't let reviewers or your installer tell you otherwise, they will be wrong. The RU line is condensing and requires the plastic type venting, PERIOD. My installer misled me and somehow I confused what I had read... what a pain!* Hot/Cold valves come with the unit (at least with mine, be certain to check) so you shouldn't need to purchase more* DO NOT REDUCE THE SIZE OF THE CONDENSATION DRAIN!! My installer did and I kept getting condensation alarms and cold water. Fortunately I was handy enough to know what to check and the hardware store was still open. I replaced his crappy drain setup with a clear flexible PVC tubing and it has worked well since.* Your installer does not know more than the installation guide, read it first so you can correct him if he suggest something that isn't true. You shouldn't have to do this but it seems many installers rarely install the condensing units.* Tankless units require a small amount of electricity when they are being used (less than a 40watt bulb, generally) which means they will stop working when the power goes out. I got a battery backup, just in case. If I lost electricity for an extended period, I'd simply turn the battery backup on and off when I wanted water.I had one issue where the unit wasn't turning on or off at the right flow rates. I had a plumber call Rinnai and go through some steps. Rinnai decided that a part needs to be replaced, they said if that doesn't fix it, they'll replace the whole thing. I haven't had this done yet as the issue has mostly resolved itself. I will, still, because it's not 100% (takes more than .4 GPM to activate and turns off around .4 GPM)I can't really comment on gas usage since it's included in my HOA, I got the unit to have endless hot water. I hate running out of hot water! If you have a room mate, family member or a several people in your house.. you will understand where I am coming from. I had a room mate that would take a 20 minute hot shower and I'd end up with about 2 minutes of hot water, if any.If you're upgrading to tankless, I recommend this unit. I probably could have gotten away with the 8GPM model but I didn't really understand how much each of my fixtures/appliances used (my old water heater didn't have a flowrate indicator); however, the difference in price (from certain retailers) isn't that much and it's nice to know I won't ever have to worry about flowrate issues. Don't bother with the 82% efficiency and less units because you'll lose out on long term savings and the short term savings aren't really worth it. This unit has an excellent warranty as long as you register it within the first 30 days after install.
